Can Chat GPT replace Product Managers?

Chat GPT believes that while AI can help PMs by automating redundant tasks, it cannot take over the human element of the Product Manager’s role.

Product Management requires understanding customers' needs and relating them to real-life experiences. Skills like stakeholder management, rigorous prioritization, and market understanding are must-haves. All these skills are not possible without human judgment, and hence the role of a human becomes irreplaceable.

How can Product Managers utilize Chat GPT?

Chat GPT can help Product Managers become more efficient by aiding them in a plethora of day-to-day tasks like designing product roadmaps, creating surveys, analyzing customer reviews, etc. Let us find out how a PM can make the best use of Chat GPT.


  • Product Ideation: Chat GPT can help a PM during the ideation stage. Product Managers can search for ideas and determine how to generate revenue through new use cases. They can give some context to Chat GPT, and it can suggest ideas related to new product development, product expansion etc. PM can do 

  • Product Strategy: Chat GPT has the potential to learn new frameworks and devise strategies for products based on these frameworks. For example - We want to design a product strategy for Amazon Grocery using the popular CIRCLES framework. We can teach the framework to GPT, and based on the inputs, it can devise a high-level strategy for Amazon Grocery.

  • Customer Analysis: Chat GPT can design intriguing, in-depth surveys to conduct user research. Additionally, it can help in generating personalized content for emails that can be sent to customers requesting interviews. Once the survey data is available, Chat GPT can also provide a summary analysis.

  • Outlining PRD: A PM needs to define the product requirements for the different stakeholders succinctly. This is usually done by creating a detailed Product Requirement Document(PRD). Using Chat GPT, a PM can generate a brief PRD. It can ask Chat GPT to design different user personas and use cases, define OKRs, list success metrics, etc., in the PRD.

  • Design Experiments: Before the final launch of any product, a PM often conducts several experiments to determine product market fit. A PM can run a simple A/B test showing different features to users in different buckets. Chat GPT can help in recommending A/B tests and defining the right experiment size to test the feature. 

Limitations on how Chat GPT can be used by Product Managers

  1. Chat GPT should not be used to generate detailed PRD. A PM should take a high-level idea from Chat GPT and use his skills to build the PRD.

  2. PM needs to determine the feasibility and market fit of the ideas offered by Chat GPT. 

  3. Chat GPT might not be aware of all the frameworks used by Product Managers. Some of these might be internal to an organization, so it is important for PMs to provide correct inputs to GPT.


Why is Microsoft heavily investing in Chat GPT?

Recently there has been news of Microsoft extending partnerships to Open AI and investing $10 Billion. 

Chat GPT appears to be a threat to Google Search. Microsoft wishes to revive its search platform Bing and compete directly with Google Search. Chat GPT can aid Microsoft as it offers more accurate search results. Microsoft can integrate Chat GPT with its existing product offerings.
