What is Chat GPT - The Next-Generation AI? [Simply Explained]

Chat GPT(Generative Pre-trained Transformer)

Is Google under threat? Have you heard the recent rumors that Google search might soon become obsolete? Let's try to find out why it is the talk of the town.

Let's see what Chat GPT has to say about this.

What is Chat GPT?

Open AI has launched an interactive chatbot known as Chat GPT which can provide answers to complex questions in the way a human does. What sets it apart from other chatbots is the ability to understand human intent in a question and then respond accordingly.

The service of Chat GPT is free and might be monetized later.

Interestingly, ChatGPT has crossed 1 Million sign-ups in less than a week’s time and has the potential to disrupt Google search and make a host of jobs obsolete.

The service of Chat GPT is free and might be monetized later.

How can Chat GPT be monetized?

  • Paid API: Open AI can offer paid API to companies who wish to integrate Chat GPT into their applications or services in a similar way that Google offers its Maps API.

  • Selling Content: Chat GPT is capable of generating a huge and varied amount of content in the form of media, written text, audio, etc. This content can be useful for companies that frequently run email campaigns, online courses, e-books, etc. Open AI can charge them for using this content.

  • Chatbot services: OpenAI can also consider building a chatbot service that is trained on the feedback from ChatGPT and monetize it.

How is Chat GPT trained?

Chat GPT has been trained using supervised as well as reinforcement learning with human feedback. Supervised learning is a form of learning where the model is trained based on labeled data. Reinforcement learning using human feedback enables the model to learn using feedback from its own actions and experiences.

The model uses 175B parameters making it one of the largest language models ever trained.

Chat GPT constantly learns and fine-tunes itself from all the data generated by its users.

Use cases of Chat GPT:

  • Content Creation: Chat GPT can be used to create interactive content, and marketing pitches, and compose research papers, essays, and any piece of content that one can imagine. There are articles posted on popular sites like Medium which have been generated through Chat GPT.

  • Coding: If Chat GPT is given instructions in simple language, it can generate a code for the same in the desired computer language. It can also debug or simplify codes.

  • Text translation: GPT is able to translate one language into another without any additional learning just through a simple prompt.

  • App/Website creation: Using GPT’s free API, companies can create apps and websites for education, gaming, content writing, etc. For example - Algolia is using Chat GPT to help users perform a faster and more relevant search.

Advantages of Chat GPT:

  • Human-Like: It is able to generate human-like and detailed text.

  • Personalization: It can provide more accurate and personalized information based on historical interactions

  • Scalable: Chat GPT can handle large volumes of incoming requests making it suitable for platforms that experience huge traffic on their platform.

  • Cost-effective: Chat GPT can reduce the need for human intervention as it can automate manual tasks. This means companies can utilize human efforts at more suitable places and save costs.

Limitations of Chat GPT:

  • Heavy Computation: Chat GPT has high computational requirements making it infeasible to run on low-powered devices like mobile phones.

  • Large dataset requirement: Chat GPT heavily relies on a large dataset for training purposes. It might struggle to understand and answer questions that are materially different from the ones it has been trained upon.

  • Answers provided by Chat GPT might seem correct but not always be so: There are certain examples posted on social media that clearly show that not all answers given by Chat GPT might be correct.

For example - When Chat GPT was asked “Which mammal lays the largest eggs?” It answered elephants and in the follow-up questions gave even bizarre responses. Twitter thread here

Negative implications:

  • Education: Chat GPT can increase the scope of plagiarism. Students can submit research papers, essays etc. generated through AI. Few universities in the US have already restricted access to Chat GPT in their premises.

  • Ambiguous content: Chat GPT can generate a huge amount of vague and nonsensical content. This can lead to a plethora of wrong answers on the internet. Stack overflow, a question-and-answer website, has already banned the usage of Chat GPT to generate answers to questions.

  • Hacking: Using Chat GPT, even a novice hacker can write malicious code or phishing emails. This can pose a huge risk to cyber security.

  • Bias and Racial Discrimination: Since the time Chat GPT has been launched it has received several criticisms related to bias. There are several examples on the internet that display how the output from Chat GPT has inherent human bias.
